On August 16, 2008 Team Illuminata is going to try it's hand at a new form of motorsport-SuperMoto Rally-X.
Some of you may have heard about this, others may be hearing about it for the first time. Cash prizes $2000, 5 deep, $1000 first! This event will be held at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan, August 16th, late afternoon/early evening. Schedule is to be finalized. Sunday rain day if required. It is running in conjunction with a Motorbike SuperMoto event and is NOT SCCA sanctioned. There will be two cars on track a half a lap apart in a knockout format. NOT door to door. There will be practice runs, knock out runs and final runs . Everyone should get 10 to 15 runs if we run quick and clean according to the promoter. Course is 80% paved, 20% dirt. There are NO jumps anymore as they proved unnecessary and inconvenient. Instead we will have a little more sliding around on the dirt. The outer and inner ovals are banked and paved and the inner crossover is flat tarmac. There is an elevation change coming off the large outer oval onto the inner oval (bottom left on the track map ) but my car handled it fine in the rehearsal without getting airborne. Top speed around the long outer banking was top of second in my car, perhaps 60-70 mph. I've seen that speed in autocross before. Here's a video link of the practice session that includes the now defunct "jump" / speed bump so please ignore that bit.
If you want to join the fun and win some cash here are some details:
No tire restrictions. Cars accepted at discretion of the promoter, photo required with entry, He's looking for "proper" rally cars and those that look a bit like them. Clean, loud, fast machines. No demolition derby type stuff. All panels and lights present etc? If you are getting this email then I feel you have a car that fits the bill. Must have mud flaps on driven wheels though [edit: gone for 2009 on]. Need 10 entries min, 20 max, first come, first served. Driver entry fee is $75 - all access, crew pass $25 - all access, grand stand seating only is $15. A white number panel and numbers are required if not already on the car. Official number panel and numbers can be had from David Allan at Link Promoter's decal package is also required (free). Not too much stuff I understand. Insured event. No special safety gear required except for your helmet. Now we just need cars. Please feel free to spread the word to other owners of suitable vehicles. Entry form is available here: It's a bit SuperMoto bike oriented but do your best with it. Please include a photo of your car with your entry. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or the promoter. For your information, neither myself nor Team Illuminata Motorsport are part of the organization. Just doing our bit to get us all more ways to play with our cars and perhaps earn a bit of prize money.
Would a stock Impreza Outback be considered a "proper" rally car? I'm definitely interested in driving, but I don't know if my car is quite what they are looking for.
It isn't "quite" what they are looking for but they started out wanting to replicate the X-games complete with 100' jumps. We talked them down from that so to speak so when it comes to cars anything that is clean and complete and not obviously a "beater" is fine by me. Having said that anything you can do to rally-bling it would be good. Noise is always nice as are decals. Paul Eddleston
I plan on driving in the event. I'll be upping the proper rally car points by buiding a straight pipe and adding stickers (also should improve HP). No more jump/bump = good. 2004 Toyota Matrix XRS - Not mine, but I Rally X it 1991 Talon TSi - Rally X 1986 Porsche 951 - Track

Great.
Is the Matrix going to be there too? Paul Eddleston
Paul, I had some thoughts on this when we first talked about this event. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to flesh out the idea and present it to you. It may be too late, but I figure it's worth mentioning.
What does everyone think about treating this like an exhibition race - similar to the Toyota Long Beach Pro/Celebrity Race? I'm not expecting the cast "Beverly Hills 90210" to show up and drive (thankfully), but we could model our graphics after that event. All the cars would have similar graphics applied - with only numbers and color variations to identify a particular driver. Ideally these graphics would be generic enough to work on a wide-range of cars, and possibly provided in part by the venue or a primary sponsor. This may increase participation by allowing drivers with suitable (yet plain) cars to run flashy graphics without breaking the bank. It also allows the creation of a "concept" for the event. We could have multiple teams of cars to give the event a "travelling roadshow/Roller Derby/Harlem Globetrotters" feel. RETRO-TASTIC!!
I don't know - maybe it's a crap idea. Maybe I'm a promotional genius, or maybe, just maybe I've had too much IPA today.
#126 PA - The Silver Sloth "Fixed" center diff - still slow
First off, let's get one thing straight, there is no such thing as too much IPA unless of course you are driving. That leaves the other two possibilities. As I am not experienced enough with the Toyota Long Beach Pro/Celebrity Race to judge I have passed your comments on to the event promotor.
I'm signed up but according to the email I received back, I am 1 of 24 entrants. Is there still a 20 max cap? If they want X-Games, they need a whole lot more dirt. Their track looks more like they want drifters or Race Of Champions. Chris Smith #25 PF 2001 Ford Focus ZX-3

Very true - I'm currently on the Left Coast enjoying the many fine local IPAs of the Portland/Seattle area. The list is very, very long.

Cool - just tossing out random ideas
Team Illuminata wrote ... are you coming along?
I'd definitely like to make it, but my Neon "race car" only has shaved TOYO race tires that I can't afford to burn up on gravel, and the Subaru is painfully boring from a promotional standpoint. If I can come up with some more appropriate, yet budget friendly rubber for the Neon - I'll be there.

Perhaps that number includes the other car event they have going on with the SuperMoto. A mini legends something or other.
They are definately not after drifting but the ROC was one of our models after we got the promotor off his 100' jump idea. The other thought was something akin to Euro style rally cross. Yes, more dirt would be nice.
Glad you signed up. It's going to be fun. Paul Eddleston
